Last night I discovered that Italians in general have not been introduced to the American concept of a cookie (biscotto, pl. biscotti). When Ramòn left his oatmeal (avena) here in Pisa, Claudia found it and asked me what could be done with it. I explained that the most normal things were either to eat it as a breakfast food or to make oatmeal cookies. This spawned the discovery of Italian deprivation. So tonight we bonded over another American speciality, spiced oatmeal raisin cookies, and discussed all the different American dishes we will be cooking come Thanksgiving. I've been studying a lot of Italian lately, and my vocabulary has extended enough such that we were actually able to chat for a couple of hours.
